The Times names veteran investigative journalist interim local news editor

A veteran investigative journalist has been named interim local news editor of The Times of Northwest Indiana.

Analisa Trofimuk, 30, assumes command of The Times newsroom after spending the past few years undertaking investigative reporting projects for The Times’ parent company, Lee Enterprises, as a member of the company’s national Public Service Journalism Team.

Trofimuk’s work with the investigative reporting team included leading projects in partnership with Northwest Indiana reporters.

"The Times of Northwest Indiana is an incredible newsroom full of journalists who care deeply about the readers we serve," Trofimuk said. "I am thrilled to have the privilege to lead this talented group and look forward to keeping our readers informed about what is happening in their communities."

The newsroom was formerly led by Times Executive Editor Kathy Chaney, who is no longer with the company

Earlier in her career, Trofimuk reported on government and politics at two central Illinois newspapers owned by Lee Enterprises — the Herald & Review in Decatur and the Pantagraph in Bloomington. Her work in Decatur earned first-place awards from the Illinois Press Association for best investigative/enterprise reporting and best overall story in 2019 and 2020.

The veteran journalist also previously worked at the Better Government Association, now called the Illinois Answers Project, where she fact-checked officials and worked on long-term investigations as a PolitiFact reporter.

Trofimuk earned a multimedia journalism degree from Columbia College Chicago and a master's degree in data journalism from DePaul University.

Lee Enterprises Senior Director of Local News Marc Chase, who oversees news operations in several states and manages the Lee Enterprises Public Service Journalism Team, said Trofimuk has proven she can lead reporters from various news markets in producing impactful journalism.

“Analisa has demonstrated she can get the best out of our reporters while serving readers with incredible investigative journalism,” Chase said. “She already knows Northwest Indiana well, and she has strong connections with The Times newsroom. She’ll help us move forward.”

Brazil Times Announces New Editor

For those who do not know me, I’d like to officially use this column as an introduction. My name is Codey Emerson and for the last year, I’ve been a staff writer here at The Brazil Times. Life, as I’ve found out, many times, has a way of throwing you some unexpected curveballs and here recently boy did I ever get one thrown my way.

I remember the phone call I received from Jared Jernagan, who at the time was my boss as the editor. He was calling me to let me know that he had taken his new position as executive director of the visitors bureau in Putnam County.

I’ll be honest, I was in a little bit of shock and disarray when I heard that he would be leaving. I didn’t know what that would mean for me, my career, or most importantly this newspaper. However after countless talks with many people, I finally caved in and told them that I would take the position as editor and do my very best to keep up the same standard that Jared has held.

With that being said, I’m excited for the new opportunity and challenge that lies ahead. I know that have big shoes to fill as Jared put everything he had into this position. There’s plenty of people who I’ve met already that I’m excited to get to know more and engage with here in the community. Whether it be school boards, local government, the amazing non-profits we have here in Clay County and many other great organizations, I look forward to building and cultivating those relationships.

I’ll also say this. I know there are things that are going to be missed by not just me, but by us as a newspaper as well. With that, I ask that if you have anything that you feel you would like to be included in the paper, please don’t hesitate to reach out to either of us. I can be reached out cemerson@bannergraphic.com or our newsroom email which is editorial @thebraziltimes.com

I’ve been involved with newspapers ever since I graduated from Ball State University (Go Cards!) in 2019 and have seen the industry change so much during that time. While my first love is sports, I’ve really enjoyed this last year getting to dabble in the news side of things. As I said earlier, Clay County has so many great people that I’ve enjoyed meeting and getting to work with and I know there’s plenty more I still have to meet.

Lastly I’ll conclude with this. I know there’s going to be mistakes that I make (have already made a few). I won’t use this as an excuse, but I am still learning this new role and I know it there will be some rough patches. I like to pride myself in making sure everything is done to the very best of my ability and that is the promise that I make to you the reader.

Thanks for reading and I can’t wait to see where this new journey takes me.
